Pull the actual historical temperature extremes for your deployment sites, not a generic assumption. Ask for: both operating and storage temperature ranges — they’re frequently different and both matter for shipping/storage planning.
6:Ingress Protection (IP) Rating
Match the rating to actual water and dust exposure — IP30 for cabinet-protected indoor installs, IP65+ for direct outdoor exposure, IP68 for continuous submersion or burial scenarios. Don’t let “industrial-grade” branding substitute for the explicit two-digit code on the datasheet.
Ask for: the explicit IP rating stated on the model’s own datasheet, not inferred from the product family name.
7:ESD, Surge, and Electrical Isolation Protection
Sites with strong electromagnetic interference — near motors, switchgear, or in areas with frequent lightning activity — need specific static discharge and electrical isolation ratings, not just a general “protected” claim.
Ask for: specific kV ratings for ESD protection and electrical isolation, plus confirmation of reverse-polarity and surge protection.

Items 8–11: Connectivity & Interface Requirements

8:Ethernet Port Count and Speed
Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) is sufficient for most sensor and monitoring traffic; Gigabit ports matter for video, high-throughput applications, or sites aggregating multiple downstream devices. Count actual required ports rather than assuming a default port count fits every site.
Ask for: exact port count, speed (Fast vs. Gigabit) per port, and whether all ports are Gigabit or a mix.
9:Serial and I/O Interface Requirements
Specify explicitly whether you need the router to receive power over Ethernet (PD mode), source power to downstream cameras/APs/sensors (PSE mode), both, or neither — these are different capabilities with different costs, and “PoE support” alone is an ambiguous spec.
Ask for: confirmed serial port type/count, DI/DO count, and whether GPS is built-in, optional, or unavailable on the quoted model.
10:PoE Requirement and Role

14:Warranty Terms and Support SLA
Standard warranty length, response time commitments during and outside business hours, and firmware update policy all materially affect total cost of ownership, but rarely appear on a price-only comparison sheet.
Ask for: warranty length, average response time (business hours and after-hours), remote issue-resolution rate, and whether firmware updates are free for the product’s lifetime.

Specifying “Industrial Grade” Without Defining What That Means

Leaving VPN and Remote Management as a Single Checkbox

Omitting Warranty and Support SLA From the RFQ Entirely

A price-only comparison hides real total-cost-of-ownership differences in warranty length, support responsiveness, and firmware update policy. Request these terms explicitly alongside the unit price, not as an afterthought during contract negotiation.

Not Specifying SIM Redundancy Requirements by Site Criticality

Applying a single SIM-redundancy requirement across every site in a mixed-criticality deployment either overspecifies low-priority sites or underspecifies mission-critical ones. Tier your requirement by actual site criticality rather than a blanket specification.

Skipping a Real Lead-Time and MOQ Conversation Until After Selection

How to Score and Weight Vendor Responses

Once responses come back, resist the temptation to average everything into one number immediately. I sort the 15 items into three weight tiers first, because not every specification carries equal consequence if a vendor falls short on it.

Tier 1 — Disqualifying

One caution on scoring: don’t let a strong Tier 2/3 score talk you into overlooking a Tier 1 gap.
